The best, the absolute best, thing about writing mythical/historical pairings set in Ancient India as versus Ancient Greece or Rome is the absolute lack of sexual constraints. If you can imagine it, not only have they done it, it is described in some text or manual with helpful little notes about the most convenient placement of limbs, plus it is engraved on some temple wall somewhere to aid in the education of an illiterate populace. If your particular partner doesn't know how, that's ignorance and not propriety: your wife can have just as many tricks as the most highly-paid courtesan, you just have to teach her.
All of which is such a relief after having to create excuses for anything beyond a handy or a quick spot of intercrural sex.
Er. This is not to disclaim the brutal patriarchy of say the Gupta period and onwards, though actually you know what, considering Europe atthe time what am I being defensive about even?
This rant-at-dawn brought to you by Mahabharata-fic and a bout of acidity.

I have snuck 70k of fic into 2015, despite a seriously lacking (in comparison to last year) Yuletide, on the back of a 10k fic written over the last four days. I also had a friend over on the 30th and today we went climbing a little, but the important thing is the fic, clearly. What is my life, what are my choices, etc.

Thank you Yuletide Gods, my recip. likes my fic upto and including the mention of other characters and ships. whew!

Onto the goodies! I got three lovely stories, two in the main collection and The Least Anonymous Treat in Madness:

Full Spectrum, which is a long and polyamorous soulmates AU in the Check Please 'verse, and is full of snippets of college life and hockey and photography and baking and a gorgeous attribution of particular colours to each member of the polygon.

Long is the way and hard, where Andrew shows up to talk to Laurie and Ralph at the latter's flat and is driven back all roiling with angst and confusion. Poor Andrew. I loved the way Ralph looks through Andrew's eyes, and how clear-headed the boy is, really, considering the veil Laurie has been drawing. (I suspect this stands as sequel to last year's Corkscrew, at least in spirit, but of course it might turn out to be not intended as such at all.)

Acts of the Stomach, that Least Anonymous Treat is an iteration of Mahabharat set in a modern AU and is an absolute delight to read. I read it on my phone this morning and squealed and shrieked. Dearest We-Both-Know-Who-You-Are, you're not getting out of collaborating.

I'm extremely excited that we matched for Yuletide. I haven't requested any of these fandoms for a year, and one of them is extremely new and shiny! I like all aspects of canon, and am sure to like any story told in these worlds, so have at it.

General Notes:
  • All ratings acceptable.

  • All Alternate Universes loved in addition to canonical events.

  • I'm okay with het, slash, and femslash.

  • I like all sorts of fic, ranging from fluffy gen through dark and/or porny (though I haven't signed up for either Yuleporn or Crueltide).

  • I have no trigger warnings, and would in fact prefer any depictions of violence--a possibility in all my nominations to an extent--to be dealt with in a realistic manner; I don't freak out easily, so have at it if the story takes you that way; conversely, if you dislike writing sex or violence or violent sex, I'll be as happy with light-hearted banter and shenanigans--also a possibility in all my nominations.

Fandom-specific details:
  • Mahabharata - Vyasa. Karna, Amba | Shikhandi, Krishna. This is hard to request, because I know anything is vague and unhelpful, but honestly I'd like anything about the three of them. In my head they're roughly the same age, so if you want to run with that, awesome. They're not remotely all on one side, so frosty silences or attempts at persuasion or outright fights could be a thing. Something political would be wonderful, as would a slice of life, or character-explorations, or domestic fluff. Anything, really and truly.

  • The Charioteer - Mary Renault. Ralph Lanyon, Alec Deaxcon. Andrew Raynes. As I go on, I find that I like Andrew a lot more than on my first few perusals. I'd really like to see him interacting with Ralph and/or Andrew, in whatever circumstances. Ralph and Alec's relationship at any stage would also be welcome. I ship these three in all combinations, so if you want to write a shippy story I'd love that. I would equally love gen-fic. Future-fic, kid-fic, intensely-researched fic, complete AU, tropey fluff, buckets of angst, gobs and gobs of ketchup: all equally appreciated. Just gimme something about one, two, or all of these three.

  • Check Please! (Webcomic). Eric Bittle, Jack Zimmerman, Larissa "Lardo" Duan, Shitty Knight. This is the shiny new fandom, so I'm not up on everything. I've read the canon and jumped into tumblr, and of course Eric's twitter, so feel free to go into any and all of that. I know very little about hockey, but I'm willing to be taught, so if in-game stories are your thing, 'sawsome. If you wanna write about baking, or photography, or art, or an impassioned rant about gender justice, ditto. I just want a slice of college life at Samwell with these four, shipping entirely optional but entirely welcome (I ship them all in various combinations starting at queerplatonic bros all the way up to soulmates) so do your thing and rest assured I'll love it.

  • The Iliad - Homer. Achilles, Patroclus, Odysseus, Briseis. Anything! I'd like pre-war, in-war, post-war stories, whatever suits your fancy. I'm okay with gore and violence if that's where you want to go with it, and just as okay with domesticity in a long-term camp. I ship Achilles/Patroclus with great fervour, but I'd also like something about Briseis/Achilles just as much. If you want to bring Patroclus front-and-centre, I'm all for that as well. Culture clashes, claustrophobic cohabitations, late night conversations, battle strategy, nature red in tooth and claw, sylvan childhoods, anything and everything is loved.
If any of my fandom-specific notes don't work with the fic in your head, feel free to ignore the above. I'll like whatever you write, and Optional Details Are Optional. If you want to check up on details, message [archiveofourown.org profile] filia_noctis, who knows me inside-out and is horribly good at keeping secrets from me. I hope you have fun writing!

Addendum to the previous post, that got a little long and distracting. Apparently I'm really fucking pissed about Krishn's intervention in Draupad’s vastraharan.

The Mahabharat is a text pretty fucking invested in magic and the gods, okay, but you never have to believe in them, as long as you're ready to believe a little careful lying around the edges instead (the Pandavs can be the result of sex with men instead of gods; the gandharvs are just a more technologically advanced group of people medically-speaking re: Shikhandi’s sex-change operation, or dildos and lies and adoption; Draupadi and Dhrishtadyumna had been born earlier and the emerging for fire is them being recognised as heirs; Krishn shows up with cart-loads of food for the hungry rishis etc), except when it comes to this frankly pivotal scene.

Krishn is engaged in fighting for his life (or at least kingdom) several states away, the intervention, if he's human, requires him to be thinking roughly fifty moves ahead of the Kauravs. Which, fine, this is Krishn, Imma buy what you're selling, he might totally have sent a hundred-yard long saree along to Draupadi with instructions, and I've read at least one novel that goes that route. Mind, she's only dressed the way she is because she's menstruating, but they're totally the sort of creepy friends who know that shit about each other. I have faith in this.

But she's menstruating, she's dressed in a single garment (the cheera of cheerharan, as this episode is also known, refers to a thin, often old, garment) with her hair loose, why the hell would she be wearing a forever-long fancy sari? Keep in mind also that women back then didn't wear sarees, they wore a dhoti-like lower garment, and a scarf on the upper body that might or might not be wrapped over the breasts (from the sculptures it usually wasn't but both artistic license and personal preference intervene here). Basically the same garments as men wore. Well, free men. Slaves just wore the dhoti, kirtled up above the knee for manual labour. This is again regardless of sex. The proposal to disrobe Draupadi stems from one to take the upper garments from her husbands once they have become dasas, and continues through an assertion that, now that she is a dasi, it hardly matters whether Draupadi is barely-clothed or completely bare, so take her one garment instead of the uttariya or scarf.

A side-bar here to say that Duryodhan till fairly late is thinking of Draupadi's duties as a dasi along the manual labour line, while Karn has gone straight to the foe yay place because Karn is creepy that way. Way to go, dude.

Anyway, here we have then a woman in (at least) her forties, menstruating, being disrobed by her husbands' cousin, in a gambling hall. Horrific, and more so because, while there is no purdah, (a) a gambling hall is a low sort of place, (b) a menstruating woman is both polluted and sacrosanct, (c) Karn has successfully brought the sexual aspect into everyone's heads by now.

At this juncture, intervention by Krishn, general astonishment, Draupadi gearing the fuck up after having already blasted everyone and pulling the Pandavs from slavery while vowing terrifying things to do with blood. But okay, here's the thing, everyone still talks about it in terms of the violation, that she was dragged there, that she was assaulted, that the disrobing was attempted at all.

SO WHY THE FUCK IS THERE DIVINE INTERVENTION. ugh.

No, really. It doesn’t change anything, and this is not a text that shies away from either sex (pre-marital, extra-marital, the works) or sexual assault, c.f. Surya’s rape of Kunti, where she literally passes out. And certainly everyone reacts in a way that I can’t imagine could have been stronger if Draupadi had been disrobed, whether Bheem’s vows, or Krishn’s rage, or Kunti’s gone-cold anger, or, oh my queen my queen, Draupadi herself, standing in that gambling hall holding the hair Dushasan had dragged her by and swearing she will bathe it in his blood. (Spoiler, she does.)

I just... I don’t get it? Later interpolation, when people are more concerned with issues of virginity, and/or more inclined to worship Krishn as an outright god? Something?

Following [personal profile] petra's post, am wondering about Mahabharata.

Worst I can think of is Arjun has Karna. (Karna has Duryodhan and/or his chief wife, because I love Karna).

I wrote 17 stories last year, ranging from just over 1000 words to just over 12,000, and totalling over 78k words. A good chunk of that, just under a third of it, was for Yuletide. Still, not a bad haul, for an otherwise fraught and busy year.

The fandom break-down is alphabetical, and within each fandom, by word-count:

Alexander Trilogy:
Foster-Child of Silence and Slow Time (1124 words) (Yuletide)
Autumn, Fall (1062 words)

Hadestown:

the night, the beloved body (12163 words) (Yuletide)

Harry Potter:
Tieresias Trap (8608 words) (w.i.p)
and the life (7709 words) (w.i.p)
The Wish to Move Backward (3166 words) (r-s games)

Mahabharata:
kounteya (6481 words) (w.i.p)

Maurice:

Isn't Love (1170 words) (edited and posted to AO3)

Night Watch:
not the squares of the cinema but envelopes of affection (1428 words) (Rare Women)

Penny Dreadful:
Between the Shadow and the Soul (5027 words) (Yuletide)

The Charioteer:
conditions best suited of all to unreserve (9789 words) (w.i.p)
The Thousandth Man (6569 words) (Yuletide)
Not a House or Even a Tent (6084 words)
restless nights in one-night cheap hotels (3514 words)
A Vote of Thanks to Mr. Abse and Lord Arran (2529 words) (Yuletide)
the unwearying heart over the waves of the sea (1500 words)
Auld Lang Syne (1001 words)

ETA: Because it's right there at the top anyway, my total stats on AO3, over 172 fics spread in 38 fandoms (not counting variations of the same fandom) are:

Woefully small, compared to most who have been around five years and change, but I'm not remotely prolific.

What's interesting about the stats is that I can practically chart my mental health by looking at them. 2014 has been a good year, at least since August and is certainly the most I've written in a year, with 2013 clocking in at just below 60k (59861 words) and 2010 a distant third (42817 words). 2009 gets off easy, since that's when I got into fandom and was writing almost entirely drabbles, and because a lot of what I was writing was in role-plays on various communities. You can see the worst of the depression just by looking at output-levels: in 2011 I wrote just over 16k in 10 stories, of which 7 were for Yuletide; in 2012 I wrote 21k or thereabouts, missing Yuletide entirely but getting invested in The Charioteer as a writing fandom.

My aim for 2015 is to write at least 80k of fanfic, and hopefully get a chunk of work done on the novel.
