My grandmother was a child in the streets of Calcutta when there were people begging for food, not even for rice but for starchy water. Churchill was wondering why Gandhi hadn't died yet, with a stunning lack of basic geography, and refusing the release of food, and refusing to order an end to the diversion of it. Bose, who was on the side of the Axis powers by then (can one blame him?) offered to send rice and was rebuffed.

4 million died in Bengal Province that year due to sheer criminal negligence. The harvests had not been bad, but all the food was going to the coloniser's armies.

But the Brits are the good guys.

Not a source but as proof.
