Five and Twenty

My birthday started early this year. On the 19th, some hours before I boarded a train home, my grad school friends, led inevitably by bee_muse/filia_noctis, ambushed me in her room, fed me pineapple cake and gave me a camera!


Then at midnight, some half-hour ago, my family got together in my aunt and uncle's room for cake and presents. Well, mostly presents. Two sets of earrings (dagger, leaf) and a purse from my sister and cousin, cash from my aunt and uncle, and a black chiffon and a black t-shirt from my parents.

• The most frustrating part of it was that Remus treated him like a scrubby twelve-year-old. Not quite true, of course, since there were many frustrating things of which Remus' behaviour was both the least and the easiest admitted, and because Remus more often treated him like he was simply not around. Still, he had been a brat for too long to let being truthful, or twenty-one, or suddenly female get in the way of a good sulk.


• "Elaine Jameson," the woman said. "How d'ye do?" Andrew thought he would have known her everywhere for who she was, but of course she didn't really resemble Lanyon very much except for a certain steeliness.


• She met a god in the meadow, her hounds howling about her trembling knees, the bow slipping from her hands. He was beautiful: she hadn't expected that somehow, not that fragile human loveliness masking his inhuman splendour. When the twins had come through fire they had looked a little like he did; Krishn looked a little like he did.
