Ganked from
rydra_wong
She gave me three that I actually made recently, in the wake of the tumblr debacles.

I cropped this from a photoshoot about Varanasi, it's the dangling feet of someone painted blue to play Krishna; probably a bahurupi. It's my krishna icon, used mostly for posts about the god, epics, Hindu mythology, etc. My favourite god, master manipulator in my favourite epic, so I... well I don't actually talk about my religion a whole bunch on dw, but I do write Mahabharata fic, so it seemed apt in my last round of icon-making.

This is Peter O'Toole from--i think--Lord Jim. He's my face-claim for Ralph Lanyon, one of the romantic leads of The Charioteer, a merchant-navy sailor and RNVR officer who canonically has the nervous tic of touching his collar for reassurance. He's neurotic and disabled and queer and fucked-up; I love him more than I can easily explain.

So a few years ago there was a Buzzfeed article about men with mehndi looking stunning, by the always awesome Imaan Sheikh. I immediately incorporated the look into my personal headcanon of traditional West and South Asian masculinity, which was and is very different from Western, especially Anglo constructs of the same, and absolutely incorporates cosmetics and jewellery, not as a rebellious or punk or genderfluid thing, but as part of normative masc. presentation.

How it works: reply with "Oh! Shiny" and I'll choose three of your icons. Tell me about them: where they came from, what they mean to you, and/or when you deploy them. Drop a link here to your post in your own journal. Spread it around.

Date: 2019-01-29 04:46 pm (UTC)I always imagined the Krishna icon as a pair of lovely rain boots. I mean, I know you regularly used for your myth posts so I knew what they were -- but now I really want beautiful blue rain boots?
Also, Peter O'Toole would make a fine Ralph Lanyon. I mean, the charisma alone would explain why everyone puts up with him. I don't know if I have a fancast of old Ralph. Maybe a younger Rupert Penry Jones?
*quietly bookmarks the mehndi post*

Date: 2019-01-29 05:12 pm (UTC)I think O'Toole post-nosejob is a tad too pretty for Ralph, but he's as close as I can get while staying among the men. My "real" fancast for Ralph is Kate Hepburn. Rupert Penry Jones is very lovely, and I would buy him in Black Sails S4 as middle-aged Ralph very happily.

Date: 2019-01-29 06:59 pm (UTC)OOoooh. I think my classic Hollywood Ralph would be young Richard Burton + a bottle of hair dye, lol.
So my other fancast for Laurie is Shaun Evans, who plays ITV's Endeavour, in that he's a redhead who was very cute when he was younger but now his face has settled in more cynical and interesting lines. They were even in show together where they had some weird, shippy vibes and went on a very dangerous ride together in a classic car (the show itself was terrible tho.)

O, you know who has twice played Rupert Penry-Jones' initimate friend and/or lover?

Date: 2019-01-29 07:53 pm (UTC)onlytoken straight characters in Cambridge Spies?? (Actually I don't remember if RPJ's character was straight or not. Everyone else pretty much stole the show from his character though.)ANYWAY I'm glad that Black Sails rectified that, even though I will probably never watch it (I know a lot of fannish people love it, but I've tried and I just don't like the first couple of episodes of the first season at all. Also, pirate stories are like Westerns to me -- I just don't care.)
But as much as I love Toby Stephens, he seems a little too buff to be Laurie for me?? But that's all how I perceive the character for sure.

Date: 2019-01-30 03:42 am (UTC)Season 1 of Black Sails is kinda uneven, and if you're not into pirates *and* not binging, it's not easy to like.
I wasn't suggesting Stephens-as-Flint for Laurie, way too buff and bloodthirsty. He just has excellent chemistry with RPJ, and is irl much skinnier.
