The women, basically, you want to grow up and become, or maybe you want to grow up and avoid becoming. The matriarchs, who have power enough to play their own games by their own rules, are basically the awesomest women in any and every fandom, I think--they're certainly among the most interesting.

They're also rather scarce, sadly. (At least in my fandoms)

Renault's Alexandriad: Olympias, Sisygambis.
Harry Potter: (arguably) Walburga Black, Molly Weasley.
LotR: Galadriel.
Gone with the Wind: Mrs. Ellen O'Hara. (potentially) Melanie Wilkes.
Iliad/Trojan myth-cycle: Hecuba.
Masters of Rome: Julia wife of Gaius Marius. Aurelia mother of Caesar Dictator.
Discworld: Nanny Ogg. (even without family) Granny Weatherwax.
Little Women: Marmee. Jo Bhaer.
Mahabharata: Satyavati, Kunti.
Lion in Winter: Eleanor of Aquitane.
A Song of Ice and Fire: Olenna Tyrell. Catelyn Tully-Stark. (arguably, though incompetently) Cersei Lannister.
