I have found Age-of-Sail!Ralph's ship. The Doddington, which was wrecked in 1755. Now I just have to figure out whether I want him to have missed that memorable third voyage or to have spent seven months on Bird Island.

Thus:

It's all very exciting.

ETA: No, of course he must be on the third voyage. Hero status, vast PTSD, not as handy as [he] used to be, excuse bad pun. Also he can come back and pitch up at Alec's *and* it gives Alec/Sandy time to have happened, since I figure the gap between the second and third voyage (nearly a year) Ralph's really getting domestic with Alec and trying to find an onshore-job. It doesn't work out, they break it off and Ralph sails off, Sandy and Alec cosy up to each other (Sandy having just arrived and they having known each other previously), and a few months into that (3-4) Ralph shows up again. ooof.

Mmm, sunken treasure.

I suppose there's no chance Age of Sail!Ralph being a pirate? Maybe I'm thinking of Black Sails too much.

Ooh. Age of Sail!Ralph. I am too chickenshit to write proper shipboard AoS (what's the weather gauge again?)* I could see him getting dismissed the Service (perhaps unfairly) and becoming captain of a privateer (so essentially, his canon career, but backwards), sort of like Jack Aubrey in The Reverse of the Medal? I can't help seeing parallels between Ralph & Alec and Jack & Stephen.

*but one day I will write safely shorebound AoS Ralph losing spectacularly at whist to Horatio Hornblower during the Peace of Amiens.
